Breast reconstruction is a popular procedure for breast cancer patients who have undergone a mastectomy or lumpectomy during their cancer treatment. How Does Breast Reconstruction Work?
Three types of reconstruction options are available: Implant-based, staged reconstruction with tissue expanders, and single-stage/ direct implant reconstruction.
Implant-based reconstruction is when implants are used to reconstruct the size and shape of the breasts. This procedure takes place in two parts. During the first surgery, the doctor will place a tissue expander, and then the permanent implants will be placed in the second surgery.
Staged reconstruction involves placing tissue expanders. They will be gradually filled to stretch the muscle and skin and prepare them for the future permanent implant. The entire process may take two to three months. Then, the doctor will place the permanent implants once they’re ready.
In the last type, single-stage/ direct implantation is used when the patient can accommodate the implants without expanders. This is usually done directly after the mastectomy.
When Can Breast Reconstruction Be Done?
Breast reconstruction can be done immediately after your mastectomy or lumpectomy, or it can be done months later when you have healed from your procedure and completed treatment. This will be decided based on your preferences and advice from your doctor. However, if you are interested in getting a single-stage/direct implantation, this is done immediately after your mastectomy.
