Deciding on a breast reconstruction procedure after a mastectomy or other breast surgery can be overwhelming. How do you know which method of reconstruction is best for you?
At Cosmetic and Reconstructive Specialists of Florida, you’re in the care of Dr. Christopher J. Low and Dr. Michael C. Cheung, two board-certified surgeons who can help you choose the right method for your needs.
Types of Breast Reconstruction Surgeries
Dr. Low and Dr. Cheung offer two primary types of breast reconstruction: implant-based reconstruction and autologous tissue reconstruction, such as the DIEP Flap. Each option has its benefits, and the best surgery for you depends on your circumstances and preferences.
Implant-Based Reconstruction
Implant-based reconstruction offers excellent cosmetic results without needing tissue from other parts of your body. This method typically involves a two-step process known as staged reconstruction:
- Step 1: Tissue Expanders
During the initial surgery, tissue expanders are placed to gradually stretch the skin. This process allows the body to create enough space for future implants. - Step 2: Permanent Implants
After a few months, once your skin has stretched enough, we place the expanders with permanent implants in a second surgery.
For some patients, we may be able to place the implant at the time of the mastectomy, and you won’t need a second surgery.
If you prefer a quicker, more straightforward recovery and want predictable results without additional surgical sites, implant-based reconstruction could be the right choice for you.
Autologous Tissue Reconstruction
The DIEP Flap method uses your own tissue — typically from the abdomen — to reconstruct the breast. This procedure follows a detailed process:
- Step 1: Tissue Harvesting
We gently take a portion of tissue from your abdomen to create your new breast. - Step 2: Microsurgery
Your surgeon carefully transplants the tissue to your chest, ensuring a healthy blood supply through advanced microsurgery. - Step 3: Shaping and Positioning
We then shape and position the tissue to form a natural-looking breast that closely resembles your original one, giving you a look and feel that’s truly your own.
If you value a more natural outcome and are willing to invest in a longer recovery time for potentially more satisfying long-term results, this may be your best option.
Making the Right Choice for You
Choosing the right breast reconstruction procedure is a highly personal decision. During your consultation, Dr. Low or Dr. Cheung will listen to your concerns, answer your questions, and recommend the approach that best suits your needs. Their goal is to help you make an informed decision that restores your confidence and aligns with your vision for your body.
